Vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine) can act primarily as an enzyme catalyst in many body processes, including energy metabolism and neurotransmitter functioning. Before it can be used for this purpose, it must be converted into the coenzyme form (P-5-P) in the liver. P-5-P eliminates this step by providing B-6 in a transformed form, which allows for greater bioavailability.

P-5-P helps in the formation of heme (an iron-containing component of red blood cells), the production of serotonin (the happiness hormone, the deficiency of which correlates with insomnia), the release of stored energy in the liver and muscles, the maintenance of protein metabolic processes and the biosynthesis of neurotransmitters.
