Taurine is an amino acid that occurs mainly in free form in most tissues, especially throughout the nervous system. It works in tissues by stabilizing cell membranes, helping transport potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium into and out of cells. Taurine helps produce and regulate nerve impulses and helps maintain fluid balance; it is also used by the body in the visual pathways, as well as in the brain and nervous system, where it cooperates with glycine and GABA as a neurotransmitter.
