L-tryptophan

Tryptophan is one of the nine essential amino acids. The human organism is not able to produce tryptophan and must receive it with the diet. Tryptophan performs many different tasks in the body. However, the most important role that is attributed to it, is to be the starting compound for the biosynthesis of at least two types of hormones, i.e. melatonin and serotonin. Melatonin is a hormone that works in our brain. It is believed that it is responsible for the regulation of sleep and wakefulness cycle, the cycle also known as the circadian rhythm. Serotonin is particularly important because it acts as a hormone regulating the activity of many other compounds present in the brain. Control includes muscle movements, mental activity, a state of consciousness and enables sleep.
